When we think about using our serger for decorative work, we most often think about how we are going to decorate fabric, just like we do when using our sewing machines. However, because our sergers have the unique ability to serge “on air", we can take our decorative capabilities one step further! For this project, we used the serger’s ability to create a decorative cord with Perl Crown Rayonand 40wt. Embroidery thread to assemble the adorable tassels that adorn the table runner. The fun does not need to stop at those two threads, you can experiment with various types and weights of thread to get a variety of different looks to your tassels. For instance, if you were to use a 12wt. cotton thread as your heavier thread, your tassels would fit in great with today’s popular rustic décor. The possibilities are truly endless!

    • Remove the selvages from both ends of each piece.

    • Measure 9 inches down one long side of one piece and mark.

    • Measure 9 inches up the other end of the same long side and mark.

    • Fold the fabric in half to measure 6-3/4 inches x WOF.

    • Cut each end of the fabric from the mark on the raw edge to the top raw edge of the fabric at the fold, creating an angled point in each short end.

    2. Serger Setup a. Set the serger for a 3-thread rolled hem with 40wt. embroidery thread in the needle and the lower looper and the heavyweight thread in the upper looper (Stitch Length = 1.5).
