Join the Executive Director of the Virginia Quilt Museum, Alicia Thomas, for this fun look at the most popular quilting styles from the late 1700s through today. This lecture we will examine how and why the styles of quilting have changed, from whole-cloth quilts during the late 1700s to extravagant Baltimore Albums of the 1840s to the crazy quilts of the late 1800s to the use of feed sack fabrics in the 1930s and 40s to the modern art quilt movement. Examples of the different styles from the Virginia Quilt Museum collection will be shown in the presentation and a small array of quilts will be on display during the lecture. The history of quilting is tied to the history of cloth and commerce and is deeply connected to the history of the United States.
