Abstraction: Textural Elements

SAQA – Studio Art Quilt Associates
Abstract art uses the pure elements and principles of design to create emotions and thoughts in the viewer. Because it is so free and unbounded from the real world, the diversity of abstract art is truly stunning. In the way a poem distills a novel into a few words, let your abstract art offer the essence of an idea using the vocabulary of line, shape, rhythm, texture, color, value and composition. saqa.com

Y2K Quilt Project

East Pasco Quilt Guild

In 1999, while the rest of the world was worrying about the possible Y2K computer crashes, quilters around the world were celebrating their love of quilting with other like-minded individuals. A group of quilters decided it would be fun and exciting to create Y2K quilts. Each quilt would commemorate the change in Millennium by incorporating 2000 squares. So in the summer of 1999, a message was posted online instructing interested quilters to exchange 25 - 2 1/2” fabric squares with one another. The quilters were to include a “siggie” block which included their name and hometown. They were also encouraged to send a short biography with the blocks.

Kathleen Sullivan, a Tampa Bay police officer, decided to join the challenge. She sent countless packets of 25 blocks and received approximately 250 packets from around the world. Unfortunately, Kathleen never completed her quilt. She passed in 2022. After her passing, her family donated her collection of blocks to the East Pasco Quilt Guild located in Dade City, Florida. The guild decided to honor Kathleen’s memory by completing the challenge and documenting its journey. Ultimately, 11 quilts were made representing quilters from the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, British Columbia, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Holland Iceland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Northern Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, SAR China, Scotland, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States.

The Quilted Art and Poetry of Science
Kathleen P. Decker, M.D.

This is a collection of art quilts that I have created over the last few years. As a scientist, but also as a poet and artist, I yearn to unite the beauty of the natural world with some of the realities of life. This collection of quilts and poems represents recent work doing just that. One example was the quilt I created while vaccinating patients for COVID during the pandemic. It gave me great pleasure to imagine antibodies neutralizing the SARS COV-2 virus, so I quilted the battle and made it beautiful! Sometimes, I begin by creating a beautiful art quilt which inspires me to write a poem to accompany it. Other times I start with a poem, which I then represent with an art quilt. This body of work represents the integration of my vocation (medicine/science) and avocations (fiber art and poetry).

Men of Colour
Uhuru Quilters Guild

The Men of Colour Quilts is a tribute to men in members’ families and those men we admired throughout history, entertainment, science, ministries, etc. The Men of Colour quilts are created using any quilting style or technique, e.g., traditional, improvisational, wonky, free-piecing method, patchwork applique, fabric manipulation, small amounts of paint, ink, or pencils and free motion embroidery or machine embroidery. We hope you enjoy this display as much as we enjoyed creating the quilts.
Founded in 1994, Uhuru Quilters Guild reflects the diversity of African Americans and the quilting population. Skill levels range from beginner to professional with expertise in both hand and machine techniques represented.  Members are interested in traditional, contemporary, and modern designs.  While many members engaged in quilting as a hobby, the guild also has quilt instructors, judges, and historians. uhuruquiltersguildinc.org

Life and Times

Show of Hands Art Quilters

We are living in challenging times.  Many of us are struggling with the changes in our world. Sometimes we long for sweeter days. We often turn to our art to help us to cope with difficulties and to appreciate the wonders of our lives.  We artists have taken notice of the world around us, and this collection expresses our feelings about some of those we have encountered along the way.

Water

SAQA-MN

Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes with more shoreline California, Hawaii and Florida combined. Water is essential to our lifestyle and culture. This is being threatened by climate change in too little or too much precipitation. In this exhibit, SAQA-MN seeks to express our love of our lakes and rivers and the need to preserve them for future generations.

Red Carpet Recreations

Jim Suzio

You’re watching a movie when something stops you in your tracks. Is it the story, the actress, the dress? Whatever it is, you’re transfixed. The same thing happens on a runway or in a photograph that captures a moment in history, when style and fashion come together to create something unforgettable.

This collection brings those moments to life: iconic garments that capture a specific place in fashion history and spark the memory of the first time you saw them. Each piece has been carefully researched, planned, drafted, and created by one person on a home sewing machine.

So the next time someone tells you your dream is “impossible,” remember: the word itself says it all—I’m possible.
