The embroidery technique of Redwork became popular in the early 1900's and patterns quickly became available in women's magazines, by mail and at parties. Patterns were printed on muslin blocks and stitched with red thread using outline or stem stitch, satin stitch, lazy daisy stitches and French knots. The patterns continue to be mainly whimsical, featuring animals, birds, fruits, and children. They are now done with different color threads, including overdyes and are finished into quilt blocks and other quilted novelties. In the 21st century, the quilting world has combined this historical and fun embroidery technique with new threads, fabrics, and finishing for a brand-new and popular look.
